Podcast Episode 12 – Ambassadors on Mission with Gloria Furman

About our guest this week:

Karen Race Photography

Gloria Furman is wife to Dave, mother to four children, and author of several books, including Treasuring Christ When Your Hands Are Full: Gospel Meditations for Busy Moms and Glimpses of Grace: Treasuring the Gospel in Your Home.  Gloria and her family moved overseas in 2010 and planted Redeemer Church of Dubai there, where Dave serves as the pastor.

We’ve been immensely blessed by Gloria’s writing! Her webpage has quite a number of her articles listed – here are a few of our favorite pieces that she’s written:

Jesus Canceled Your Mommy Guilt Trip   (TGC)

Gospel Stability for a Life in Spin Cycle  (Desiring God)

Why Motherhood is Only for the Faint of Heart (Crossway)

Episode 12 devotional transcript:

As the Gospel progressively changes us individually, it progressively changes the world.

1 Corinthians 15:22-27 says, “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power.  For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For ‘God has put all things in subjection under his feet.'”

It can be tempting to think that the Gospel doesn’t have much to do with our every day lives aside from saving us from hell and the eternal consequences of sin. But nothing in your life is insignificant because nothing in your life is untouched by the transformation of Jesus Christ.

Because we carry Jesus’ resurrection life in us everywhere we go, the gospel transforms the most mundane moments of our lives. The gospel transforms how you and I love our neighbors next door and the ones in our homes, because it transforms our relationships. Jesus transforms how you go to the grocery store, he transforms how you clean your bathroom, and how you change a diaper – because everywhere you go, you are carrying his gospel, his message of reconciliation into that situation.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ gets down into our hearts and it never lets us go. And because of what Jesus has done, we can declare, “All of Christ for all of life,” – because, friend, there is not one area of our lives that He does not want to have lordship over. He wants to transform ALL of you, your entire existence.

As believers in Jesus Christ, we carry that word with us, we carry that mission, we carry that hope and the invitation to become part of His resurrection movement in the world.

  • “May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Rom. 15:5-6⁣⁣⁣
⁣
There are so many opportunities during Advent and Christmas to live in discord. Whether it’s plans for where you’ll spend Christmas Day, how much to spend on gifts, where to drive for the best Christmas lights, what kind of lights to hang this year ... ⁣
⁣
We will never run out of things to argue about, and this season of celebrating and festivities can amplify our sinful nature to insist on our own way. ⁣
⁣
What good news Christ is to us, then, who need Him so much. Apart from Him, there is no peace, no harmony. Let us, then, live in accordance with Him. ⁣
⁣
And look who our encourager is! God! The God of steadfastness and encouragement - apart from Him there is no steadiness, no encouragement. ⁣
⁣
What good news this is to us!⁣ Seek Him today in His Word. He is faithful, He is steadfast, He is true, and He is for us. ⁣⁣⁣

  • Think of it! God, in the humble form of a human, with real human needs of comfort, protection, food, and clothing. ⁣
⁣
What a gift Christ is, the Word Incarnate. ⁣
⁣
He came, and dwelt among us. ⁣
⁣
How can we reflect Christ’s character this Advent season? Let’s join in with our children and friends and family this season - partake of the cookies and milk, crank the music up and put decorations on the tree in no particular order, organize the sledding party, volunteer to bring the hot chocolate! ⁣
⁣
Christ came as the Comforter - bring real comfort! Deliver a meal to someone in need, send a gift to a loved one who is struggling. ⁣
⁣
Delight in the everyday, humble tasks that God has given today. They are a gift from Him! ⁣

  • “There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.” Is. 11:1-2, ESV⁣
⁣
Happy Second Sunday of Advent!
  • Thank the Lord today - His mercies are new every morning. Thank Him for the good and generous gifts He has given. ⁣
⁣
And thank Him for the hardships - He is using them to refine us more into His image every day. What a gift that is!

  • A voice cries;⁣
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;⁣
make straight in the desert a highway for our God.⁣
Every valley shall be lifted up,⁣
and every mountain and hill be made low;⁣
the uneven ground shall become level,⁣
and the rough places a plain. ⁣
And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,⁣
and all flesh shall see it together, ⁣
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” Isaiah 40:3-5, ESV

  • “No more let sins and sorrows grow,⁣
Nor thorns infest the ground;⁣
He comes to make his blessings flow⁣
Far as the curse is found.”⁣
⁣
What comfort those words are! ⁣
⁣
How far is the curse found? Everywhere! ⁣
⁣
Where, then, will His blessings flow? Everywhere!⁣
⁣
Are you waiting, expectantly, on the Lord? Then happy Advent! This season is for you. Rejoice, for He has come and will see to completion the good work He has begun. ⁣
⁣
Joy to the world!
